Singers whose lyrics dwell on immorality contribute to the problem of moral decadence the society is battling to eradicate, a cleric, Pastor Peter Okewunmi, has observed.
Okewunmi of Gospel Baptist Cathedral, Lagos, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos that some singers and artists, by the tone of their lyrics, encouraged sexual abuse and teenage pregnancy.
Okewunmi said that the teenagers could be easily influenced by the type of songs they listened to, and plays they watched.
“Teenagers who listen to immoral music can engage themselves in unsafe sexual intercourse, which eventually leads to pregnancy.
“The dirty lyrics in our modern day songs can influence the teenage sexual decisions and behaviours.
“Those songs are being played in public places, not minding who listens to them.
“I urged parents, teachers and guardians, to caution their wards on the type of songs they listen to,” the cleric said.
Also speaking, a parent, Mr Moses Adesiji, decried the attitude of playing immoral songs in most children parties, saying that such lyrics dwelt extensively on romance and sex.
Adesiji, the proprietor of Glorade Flowers Schools, Lagos, said that teenagers had tender minds, adding that any information, either positive or negative, could easily register in their brains.
“In the video recording of those dirty songs, you will see the dancers grabbing buttocks and breast while dancing.
”This scene can easily registers in the minds of children and they begin to put it into practice,” he said.
Also, Mrs Tobi Alli, a mother of four, said that some musicians were in the habit of using sexual images in their videos.
“These lyrics portray women and men as sexual objects and in no distance time, they (children) begin to practice it.
Another parent, Mr Adekunle Adedigba, said that those sexual songs should be played in clubs and should not be for public consumptions.
“These children learn music so fast than their books, our government, through the regulatory agency, should listen to the songs and view the contents of the videos before releasing them to the public.
“Also, sex education should be taught in schools at an early stage,’’ he advised.
