Indigenes of Nando in Anambra State have petitioned the state governor, Willie Obiano, over the lack of electricity supply to the community, warning that they may be forced to take to the streets if the situation is not addressed.

In a protest letter signed on their behalf by President of Loving and Caring Nigeria Initiative, Chukwuemeka Anthony, members of Nando community said they have been denied opportunity to engage in economic activities due to lack of power supply even though they were connected to the national grid.

Senator Margery Chuba-Okadigbo, member of the House of Representatives, Chriscato Ameke and their counterpart in the State Assembly, Emenaka Obinna, were copied in the letter and admonished to support effort to restore power supply to the community.

Anthony said their plight was unfortunate because youths have been idle in the community for many years due to the blackout, a situation, they feared, posed serious economic and security threats.

“We don’t have electricity supply at any time in the community. This precarious, pitiable and frustrating condition affects economic activities of energetic and innovative people of Nando. This is unfortunate because they are naturally an enterprising, business-minded people,” he said.

He regretted that while neighbouring communities such as Aguleri, Nteje, Umuleri, Otouchaare, are enjoying constant electricity supply, people in Nando are in perpetual darkness, adding, “This has resulted in inactivity and restlessness.”
