Court adjourns Kanu’s trial to October 16 as NMA panel reviews health

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has adjourned the trial of Biafran agitator, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, on terrorism-related charges to October 16, following the inability of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to conclude its assessment of his health condition.

At the previous sitting, Justice Omotosho directed the NMA President to constitute a panel of medical experts to examine Kanu’s health status.

The evaluation was intended to determine whether the medical facilities at the Department of State Services (DSS) could adequately cater to him or if he should be transferred to the National Hospital, as requested by the defendant.

The report is also expected to establish whether Kanu is fit to stand trial.

During Wednesday’s proceedings, counsel to the DSS, Mr. Suraj S’aad (SAN), informed the court that the NMA panel had yet to complete its work and requested a one-week adjournment to enable the board finalize and submit its report.

Kanu’s counsel, Chief Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), did not oppose the request.

Consequently, Justice Omotosho adjourned the matter to October 16 for the submission of the medical report and further proceedings.
