A civil society organisation (CSO), MonITNG, has raised eyebrows at a multimillion-naira road project in Yauri, a community in Kebbi, which has become riddled with potholes, cracks, and failed sections barely a month after it was completed.
In a statement, the CSO expressed dismay at the present state of the road despite the millions of taxpayers’ money that was expended on its construction. It noted that this raises questions about the quality of materials used and the firm contracted for the project.
“The people of Yauri deserve better. A road meant to ease movement and boost commerce has now become a source of frustration. The situation reflects poor supervision, negligence, and a lack of accountability in how public funds are managed,” the statement read in part.
According to MonITNG, this bears a semblance to the Argungu bye road project, which was awarded at ₦7.23 billion to Amirco Engineering Ltd, and citizens were left with substandard work despite the millions invested in the project.
The CSO described these cases as unacceptable, adding that the Yauri road collapse is a wake-up call.
“It is unacceptable that millions are wasted on projects that fail almost immediately after they are commissioned. Contracts should not just be awarded and celebrated; they must be executed with quality, durability, and sustainability in mind.
“The Yauri road collapse is a wake-up call. The Kebbi State Government must urgently compel the contractor to return to site and fix the road at no additional cost to taxpayers. Anything less will amount to rewarding mediocrity and waste.”
It also appealed to the Kebbi State Government to ensure accountability, transparency, and enforce strict monitoring of contractors.
“This is the time to act. Yauri deserves quality roads that stand the test of time, not temporary fixes that collapse after a single rainy season. Public projects must reflect value, safety, and sustainability.
“Kebbi State cannot continue on this path. The people deserve roads, not ruins. The government must rise to the occasion and hold contractors accountable.”
