Customs warn Nigerians against misuse of U.S. visas

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has issued a public advisory urging Nigerian travellers to the United States to strictly adhere to the terms of their entry visas and U.S. immigration protocols.

This follows concerns raised by the U.S. government over instances of visa misuse by Nigerian nationals.

In a statement signed by the National Public Relations Officer, Assistant Comptroller of Customs, Dr Abdullahi Maiwada, the NCS emphasized that U.S. authorities conduct ongoing security monitoring of visa holders, and violations—such as breaching the stated purpose of travel or import/export laws—could result in visa revocation.

The Customs Service also reminded travellers to declare cash exceeding $10,000 or its equivalent at exit or entry points, warning against carrying prohibited items.

It further advised all passengers to maintain good conduct, noting that fraudulent activities could lead to legal consequences under both U.S. and Nigerian laws.

According to the statement, the NCS is collaborating with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to ensure Nigeria is not subjected to an expanded visa ban that may affect law-abiding citizens with genuine travel intentions.

The statement emphasises that Intending passengers to the United States should know that whoever commits fraud in any jurisdiction will face legal consequences both under U.S. and Nigerian laws.
