Ebonyi NUJ gets new exco, reelects chairman, others

The Ebonyi Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Tuesday gets new executive with the re-election of the incumbent chairman, Samson Nwafor

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nwafor was returned unopposed for a three-year term in office.

Nwafor was sworn-in alongside six others, who were also returned unopposed: the Vice Chairman, Moses Irogu, Secretary, Mrs Chinaza John, Treasurer, Juliana Okoro among others.

The chairman, in his acceptance remarks, thanked the Electoral Committee led by Mr Tony Ukwuome  for conducting a credible elections in line with NUJ guidelines.

He promised to continue to promote, protect and defend the integrity of the state NUJ council and Nigeria at large.

“I want to assure you that under my watch, I will strive to promote, protect and defend everything that the Union stands for, especially fighting for the rights and welfare of members.

“Not minding the current economic predicament, one of our major focus in the next three years, would be the training and retraining of members.

“This has become very important considering the emerging global threats to journalism profession, such as Artificial Intelligence. We can’t afford to be left behind.

“Most importantly, I want to assure you that we are working hard to ensure that we give our Secretariat a facelift, considering its deplorable condition.

The chairman thanked the administration of Gov. Francis Nwifuru for its continued support to the Union, especially for giving members of the Union free hands to perform their constitutional duties, without any form of harassment and intimidation.

Mr Ezenwa Adiuku, Acting Southeast Vice-Chairman of the NUJ commended the election processes and urged the new executive to work according to the NUJ guiding principle.
