Eight die in Taraba boat mishap, govt plans to investigate cause

Agbu Kefas, Taraba State governor.

Another boat mishap has again occurred in Taraba State, killing several passengers on board.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday in Ibi Local Council of the state, was said to have led to the drowning of over eight passengers.

The mishap comes barely two weeks after a similar incident in Karim-Lamido Local Council of the state, where over 50 passengers lost their lives.
Head of Local Government Administration (HOLGA) in Ibi Local Council, Isa Mohammed, who confirmed the accident, said over eight persons lost their lives.

Isa, who stated that the accident did not happen in Taraba State but in the neighbouring Benue State, admitted that all the passengers on board were from Ibi Local Council.

The HOLGA, who could not ascertain the number of passengers on board at the time of the accident, warned the people of the council to desist from embarking on night voyages on waterways.

The Guardian learnt that the passengers were said to have been heading to a nearby market in Anyeshi Village near Benue State around 4:30 p.m.

The state governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, who described the mishap as “a terrible tragedy” coming shortly after one of its kind at Karim Lamido, said: “This occurrence is even more unfortunate coming on the heels of another tragic boat capsize in Karim Lamido that threw the state into mourning.”

Kefas, who expressed sadness at the incident through his Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communications, Emmanuel Bello, said various investigations were underway to unravel the immediate and remote causes of boat accidents in the state.
