The Ekiti State Government has announced a significant increase in its monthly Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), rising from N650 million to N2.3 billion in under three years.
This development was revealed on Tuesday during a cheque presentation ceremony for 30 business owners who suffered losses in a recent rainstorm that damaged properties and disrupted commercial activities in Ado-Ekiti.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of the Ekiti State Internal Revenue Service (EKIRS), Mr. Olaniran Olatona, attributed the IGR growth to the cooperation and commitment of taxpayers in the state.
“Just a few weeks ago, our beloved Ado-Ekiti was struck by devastating storms. The fierce winds did not discriminate—they tore through roofs, shattered windows, and left a trail of destruction, affecting many, including our dedicated business owners,” Olatona said.
“We witnessed firsthand the disruption to livelihoods and the deep anxiety caused by forces beyond our control. To those business owners who suffered losses: we see you, we hear you, and we deeply empathize with the challenges you have faced. Your resilience is truly commendable.”
He stressed that the gesture of supporting affected business owners was driven by the government’s empathy and commitment to the welfare of its citizens.
“Today is not merely a ceremony; it is a profound statement of our shared humanity and the unwavering commitment of the Ekiti State Government to stand with its people, especially in times of adversity,” he added.
Governor Biodun Oyebanji, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Abibat Adubiaro, commended the EKIRS for its efforts in boosting the state’s revenue and for its decision to give back to the people.
He encouraged taxpayers to continue fulfilling their civic duties, assuring them that the government remains responsive and compassionate.
“They are showing the public that the revenue service is not only about tax collection but also about supporting citizens during difficult times,” he said. “We urge all taxpayers to keep up with their payments to continue benefiting from government support.”
Some beneficiaries of the financial support expressed gratitude to the state government for coming to their aid, saying the cheques would help them recover losses incurred when their shops and merchandise were damaged by the rainstorm.
