Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State yesterday inaugurated a 14-member judicial commission of inquiry on destruction and looting of public and private property during last month’s #EndBadGovernance protest.

Yusuf specifically charged the panel headed by retired Justice Lawan Wada Mahmoud, to investigate the invasion of the high court complex and theft of critical legal documents, including alleged criminal case files against the former governor of the state during the violent protest.

Although a federal high court in Kano ruled against further activities of two panels of inquiries earlier inaugurated by the governor for parading serving justices as chairmen, Yusuf yesterday directed the new panel being headed by a retired justice not to spare anyone found wanting.

The governor lamented the level of economic sabotage during the protest, including the destruction and looting of an ICT hub established by the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) and Kano State Printing Press.

Chairman of the panel, Mahmoud appreciated the government for finding them worthy of the appointment. He expressed the readiness of members of the panel to discharge the entrusted responsibility diligently.

In another development, Governor Yusuf has revoked the contract for the construction of a five-kilometre road in Garko LGA of the state due to the “contractor’s failure to mobilise at the site”. In a Facebook post on Monday, Yusuf said the project would be re-awarded to a “reliable contractor” within a few days to ensure its timely completion.

The governor, who inspected the Kafinchiri irrigation project, said the flagship scheme will help his government’s drive to “revolutionise” agriculture.

“I was pleased to conduct an on-site assessment of the Kafinchiri Irrigation Project in Garko Local Government Area, a key initiative under our administration’s agricultural transformation drive. The project, valued at N2.5 billion, is aimed at bolstering year-round farming, enhancing food security, and driving economic growth in the state,” the post read.

Similarly, the state government has directed the immediate closure of two private schools – Ibn-Mashuud Secondary School and Matasha Private Secondary School – for operating on dilapidated structures. The government also slammed a N10 million charge against Crescent International School, another private school for alleged violation of extant laws.

Briefing journalists on the development, Executive Secretary, Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board, Baba Abubakar Umar, said the sanctions follow appropriate legal action instituted by the board.
