The former National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Rex Onyeabo, has passed on at the age of 80.
According to a statement signed by Dr Obiora Onyeabo, on behalf of the family, yesterday, the ex-PDP chieftain died peacefully on August 7, 2025.
It said Onyeabo, a founding member of the PDP, served as its National Secretary in 1999 and was on the PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT) until his death.
The statement explained that the family would announce the funeral arrangements in due course. It said Onyeabo, an engineering alumnus of Carnegie Mellon University, United States of America (U.S.A), on returning to Nigeria, was committed to public service.
The statement noted that he served in various capacities at the federal and state levels, including as Deputy Chairman, Governing Board, Federal Capital Development Authority and Chairman, Governing Council, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital.
He was also the Chairman of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital; Chairman, Nike Lake Resort Hotels, Enugu; Permanent Secretary, Enugu State Ministry of Works, Housing and Transport, Local Government Services Commission, and Information and Culture, as well as Chairman, Institute of Directors, Abuja.
The statement further explained that he ran several successful companies, adding that he was a member of the Noble Order of Knights of St. Mulumba and was an active member of the Abuja and Enugu Catholic communities.
