FESTAC Rotary installs new president, earmarks N10.5m for projects

The Rotary Club of Lagos FESTAC Cosmopolitan has installed Christiana Ogedi Akaeze as its third president.

Speaking during the event, which took place recently, Akaeze pledged to dedicate herself to serve and ensure that the 2022/23 Rotary year would be memorable, not only for herself, but also for the entire club members.

She promised to provide the required leadership, inspiration and motivation, saying: “I will put time, talent and treasure at the disposal of the club. I will be a good example; one that will maintain a high level of integrity and personal conduct, competence and tolerance.”

She promised to cultivate friendship and build team spirit, even as she assured that she would not compromise standards.

She asked for the cooperation of members and the public to be able to collectively meet the challenges ahead, even as she promised to use the best practices to preside over a functional and effective Rotary Club.

Akaeze outlined the club’s goals for the 2022/23 rotary year to include increasing the club’s membership, supporting Rotary Foundation, supporting Polio eradication efforts, supporting the district DEWEFF Fund and sponsoring 10 youths from the Festac community to Rotary youth leadership award.

She equally noted that the club has earmarked N10.5 million to undertake projects such as Rotary diagnostics, Rotary safe birth kits, Rotary micro lending and the corrective eye surgeries for cataract and glaucoma in the next 365 days.

The new president appealed to members of the club as well as friends, well-wishers and the public to donate generously to the club to enable it to execute the outlined projects.

She said: “The goals we set for ourselves this year are challenging but achievable. There is a limit to the resources that Rotarians can provide from within. That is why we request and require the support of all well meaning people in our drive to raise funds for these projects.”

In her handover note, the immediate past president, Immaculata Jemihe, reeled out the achievements of the club during her tenure to include the induction of five active members bringing the total membership figure to 26, contribution of about $4000 to Rotary Foundation, seminars and training, donations to Junior Secondary Schools in Festac, street tree planting, as well as donations to Mother and Child Hospital, Amuwo Odofin and donations to expectant mothers at the Amuwo Odofin Local Council Health Centre, among numerous other achievements.
