FG to investigate poor feeding of inmates in Calabar
The Federal Government has ordered an investigation into allegation of inhumane treatment and poor feeding of inmates at the Afokang Custodial Centre in Calabar, Cross River State as alleged in a viral video.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who ordered the investigation yesterday in Abuja, said the allegation in the disturbing video that inmates at the facility were being served poorly cooked beans as breakfast among others, is a breach of the standards of care and dignity to which inmates are entitled which would not be tolerated.
In a statement signed by his Special Assistant, Media, Babatunde Aso, the minister said government takes grave exception to the allegation and has directed a comprehensive and urgent investigation into this matter, and anyone culpable would be held accountable.
“The Minister will not condone any form of mistreatment or neglect of indivi- duals in custody. The findings of the investigation will be made public”.
