Five dead, 55 injured as flood ravages Adamawa settlements

Deputy gov visits affected communities, orders immediate relief for victims

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed five persons dead and 55 others injured as a result of flooding in parts of Yola town in Adamawa State.
  
Its Head of Operations in Yola, Ladan Ayuba, said the injured were receiving treatment at the Modibbo Adama Teaching Hospital in Yola. The early morning flooding, yesterday, after a downpour in Yola and environs, submerged houses in some wards of the state capital.
  
Boats are currently being used to rescue people in areas such as Tashan Sani, Shagari Phase II, Sabon Pegi, Anguwan Tabo, Modire, Ummare, Yolde-Pate, Sanda Fadama II, and Ibnu Abbas.
  
Personnel of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Red Cross, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence (NSCDC) are collaborating with NEMA in an ongoing rescue mission.

A resident of Yolde-Pate, Ali Adam, thanked the officials for coming to their aid. He said they had never experienced such a situation in the area, as he appealed to the state government for support.
  
Adam urged the government to take action against a company he claimed was mining in the area.Yakubu Musa, a resident of Modire, on his part, urged the state government to upgrade a major culvert in the area into a bridge to accommodate a large flow of water.
  
Meanwhile, several displaced persons are currently taking refuge in emergency camps and primary schools.The Deputy Governor, Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta, visited the affected communities in Shagari and Yolde-Pate areas of Yola South Local Council, where no fewer than two people were confirmed dead and several others injured following hours of torrential rainfall. 
  
The flood, which lasted several hours, was observed to have submerged homes, farmlands, and displaced dozens of families. Addressing journalists and victims during a visit to the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, Yola, where some of the injured were receiving treatment, Farauta expressed concern over the extent of the destruction.

She ordered the immediate provision of temporary shelters and essential relief materials to the victims.
  
“We woke up to a devastating flood this morning (yesterday). We have confirmed two deaths, many are injured, and several people have lost virtually everything”, the deputy governor said, adding: “The government will ensure the victims receive food, clothing, and medical care without delay.”
