Four killed, other injured as gas tanker crashes in Ibadan

No fewer than four persons were killed and six others injured when a fully loaded gas tanker, yesterday rammed into people in Bode Market, Molete, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The incident occurred in the early hours of yesterday.

The tanker, loaded with Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), lost control before veering into the famous herbal market.

Eyewitness account revealed that the tanker was moving from Idi-Arere towards Molete when it lost control.

The tanker also destroyed some cars on the road before it came to a halt in the market.

However, there were different reports over the actual number of casualties. One of the eyewitnesses said he counted five corpses, while another person said he counted 10.

“The gas tanker was moving from Idi-Arere side to Molete. But it suffered a brake failure. The driver lost control of the vehicle and the tanker overran some traders. About 10 people died instantly after they were crushed by the tanker.

“I can tell you that scores were injured. I advise the residents to keep a distance as the tanker could explode anytime if the situation is not well managed by the fire service.”

However, Oyo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Uche Chukwura, told The Guardian that 10 persons were involved while four were killed and six injured.

Chukwura said: “Yes, 10 persons were involved in the accident. Six injured and four killed.”

When The Guardian visited the scene, security operatives and men of the Oyo State Fire Service were making efforts to put the situation under control.
