Full List: six killings of Hamas leaders blamed on Israel

The death of Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, which was announced by the Israeli military on Thursday, is the latest in a succession of killings of Hamas leaders the Palestinian group has blamed on Israel.

Here is a list of the previous killings over the past two decades.

– 2004: founder killed –

On March 22, Hamas spiritual chief Sheikh Ahmed Yassin is killed along with seven others in a helicopter strike as they leave dawn prayers at a Gaza City mosque.

In 1997, Yassin was released from prison in a prisoner swap following the attempted poisoning by Israeli intelligence agents of Khaled Meshaal, a founding Hamas leader, in the Jordanian capital Amman on September 25.

– 2004: successor killed –

On April 17, Abdelaziz Rantissi, who had taken over from the assassinated leader, is killed in a helicopter strike on his car in Gaza City.

– January 2024: deputy leader killed in Beirut –

On January 2, 2024 nearly three months after Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel triggered war in Gaza, Hamas deputy leader Saleh al-Aruri is killed in a strike in Beirut’s southern suburbs blamed on Israel.

– July 2024: military leader killed –

On July 13, Israel says Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif is killed in southern Gaza. Hamas does not confirm his death.

– July 2024: political chief killed in Tehran –

On July 31, Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh is killed in a strike in Iran where he was attending the swearing-in of the new president, Masoud Pezeshkian.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards say he was killed by a “short-range projectile” launched from outside of his accommodation in Tehran.

Iran, Hamas and Lebanon’s Hezbollah accuse Israel of the assassination. Israel has not commented on it.

Sinwar, already the Hamas chief in Gaza, is named as Haniyeh’s replacement as overall leader on August 6.

– October 2024: Sinwar –

On October 17, the Israeli military announces that it killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar during an operation in southern Gaza the previous day.

Sinwar was accused by Israel of masterminding the attack on October 7, 2023 that sparked the war in Gaza.
