Gani Fawehinmi lecture holds Sept. 5

Chairman of the Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Organisation (GAFAMORG), Babatunde Agunbiade, has announced that the 16th yearly Gani Fawehinmi memorial lecture and anniversary will take place on September 5, 2025, in Lagos State.

Agunbiade made this known in a statement issued on behalf of GAFAMORG and the National Coalition Against Mass Killings, Extra-judicial Killings, Mob actions and Impunity (NCAMKI).

He said the theme of this year’s event is “Justice, Police Reform and the Struggle Against Impunity in Nigeria: Lessons from Chief Gani Fawehinmi’s Legacy.”

According to the statement, the theme underscores the commitment to continuing Gani Fawehinmi’s fearless advocacy for human rights, the rule of law, and good governance.”

The group, which also reacted to the recent Court of Appeal judgment that struck out some parts of the Police Act 2020, especially the sections that deal with police recruitment and the role of the Police Service Commission (PSC), said: “While we respect the Judiciary, we fear this ruling could reverse critical reforms designed to curb police abuses, strengthen Complaint Response Units (CRUs), and promote rights-based policing.”

“The coalition is asking the National Assembly to quickly correct the law without removing the important reforms already made.

“We urge lawmakers to immediately reconcile the Police Act 2020 with constitutional mandates while preserving key reforms, including community oversight and disciplinary mechanisms.”

They also called on the PSC and the Inspector-General of Police to work together, saying: “We call on both institutions to collaborate, not compete, in ensuring transparent recruitment, training.
