German envoy calls for stronger ties with Nigeria

German Consul-General Daniel Krull, in Lagos, has called for stronger German-Nigeria cooperation as it marks its 35th anniversary of German reunification, themed, “Future Through Change: Celebrating What Unites Us,” in Lagos.

Krull explained that the consulate was expanding its visa processing capacity through new infrastructure and the introduction of external service providers to reduce waiting times for Nigerian applicants.

He described the Day of German Unity as a moment of joy, happiness and gratitude, highlighting the peaceful unification of East and West Germany in 1990 as an amazing wonder of history achieved without a single gunshot. He reflected on the contributions of Germany’s neighbours and allies, including Poland, Hungary, and Russia at the time, for their roles in advancing democratic change across Europe.

Krull, who assumed office this year, emphasised that the anniversary was also a time for critical reflection and accountability, acknowledging that not all expectations of the 1990 revolution have been fully realised.

The Consul General reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to peace, democracy, and the rule of law, while stressing the need for the reform of the United Nations Security Council to give Africa a stronger voice.
