Gridlock: Lagos suspends BRT lane enforcement on Eko, Odo Iya-Alaro bridges

The Lagos State Government has temporarily suspended the enforcement of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane restrictions on Eko Bridge and Odo Iya-Alaro corridors as part of measures to ease traffic congestion caused by ongoing structural rehabilitation of the Ifako Bridge expansion joint.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, announced the decision on Wednesday, describing it as a strategic and proactive response aimed at reducing commuter hardship during the partial closure of the Ifako-bound carriageway on the Third Mainland Bridge.

Giwa explained that the temporary suspension, which takes effect immediately, would allow general vehicular access to the previously exclusive BRT lanes on the affected corridors, especially during peak hours.

“We are fully cognizant of the immense strain currently imposed on key ingress routes into the Lagos Mainland,” Giwa said. “This tactical suspension is designed to deliver immediate relief, reduce commuting time, and preserve vehicular flow while bridge repairs continue.”

However, he emphasized that commercial buses and articulated vehicles must continue adhering to existing safety regulations to avoid traffic inefficiencies or safety hazards.

In support of the directive, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has increased its operational presence and deployed personnel and traffic equipment to ensure order and prevent misuse of the relaxed enforcement.

LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Bakare Oki Olalekan, assured the public of the agency’s readiness to monitor traffic, coordinate flow, and intervene swiftly as necessary. He urged motorists to uphold discipline and act responsibly.

The state government also encouraged drivers to consider alternative routes, adopt different transport modes where possible, and stay informed through official advisories, including the LASTMA toll-free hotline: 0800-0052-7862 (0800-00LASTMA).

The suspension forms part of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s broader THEMES Plus Agenda focused on sustainable urban mobility and responsive governance.
