Group launches initiative to lift youth, women from poverty in Southeast
To cushion the effect of the current economic hardship occasioned by the removal of the petroleum subsidy, the Ike Odoeme Foundation has launched a N100 million initiative targeted at empowering women and youths in the South East.
The initiative, tagged “Project Mount,” was launched in Owerri, the Imo State capital, and aims to provide N500,000 for 40 youths to enable them to invest in agriculture and other businesses, and also empower 200 women and farmers with N100,000 each.
The project will also support businesses with interest-free loans to the tune of N10 million and establish youths through the N50 million Global Apprenticeship Hub, tagged “Nwa Boi.”
Speaking at the launch of the first phase of the project, the founder of the foundation, Ikenna Odoeme, noted that the initiatives will tackle the increasing unemployment and poverty in the Southeast region, explaining that they offer a lifeline through skills development, community empowerment, business support, and interest-free loans.
Maintaining that the foundation intends to scale the project across the country, he added that the initiative would be ongoing all year round, with businesses being selected each year for the different phases.
Odoeme highlighted the components of the project to include a youth apprenticeship hub, hands-on training, and mentorship in various trades that align with market demands. He added that the foundation will also provide financial assistance and business mentoring to farmers and Medium and Small Scale Enterprises (MSMEs).
This, he noted, will enable them to expand their operations and contribute to local economic development.
“This is just the beginning. We envision a future where every young person and woman in Nigeria has access to the resources they need to thrive.
“Project Mount is not just about empowering individuals, but about creating a ripple effect where those empowered can help themselves and, in turn, help others.”
He stated that the project will also empower communities by mobilising resources to uplift them, as well as focus on sustainable practices that drive long-term economic growth.
He maintained that the project will also offer targeted programs that equip participants with the skills needed to excel in their chosen fields, from entrepreneurship to vocational training.
A beneficiary, Ihitte-Uboma, in an interview, stated: “This project has given me the tools and confidence to pursue my dreams. I am grateful for the support and the opportunity to build a better future for myself and my community.”
Another beneficiary, a content creator and businessman, Obasi Joseph, said: “How seriously you take an opportunity determines how far you will go. Project Mount is that opportunity for many, and those who seize it with determination will pave their way to a brighter future.”
