Group seeks laws to stop early child marriage

A group, Plan International, has tasked the new administration to prioritise issues affecting girls and children. It stressed the need for the Federal Government to stop rhetorics and come up with legislations that would punish perpetrators involved in early child marriage

Its Country Director, Dr. Hussaini Abdu, in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja yesterday, said: “It is time for the government to put issues concerning the girl-child in the front burner. Successive governments have virtually left issues concerning girls on the back seat while the challenges mount.”

He lamented that nationwide, girls are caught up in one crisis or the other – from forced marriage to being child brides, teenage pregnancy, kidnapping, child labour and rape, among others.
