Group to sue Sowore for allegedly defaming Bauchi gov’s family

Bauchi Concerned Group (BCG) has threatened to institute legal action against former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, over alleged defamation against the Bauchi State first family.

Addressing a press conference in Bauchi, the Convener of the Group, Nasir Abdullahi, argued that Mr. Sowore’s allegations of corruption, land grabbing and illegal contract awards attributed to the Governor’s son, Shamsudeen Bala Mohammed, were false.

He stated that Sowore accused the wife of the governor, Aisha Bala Mohammed, Justice Kawu Yarima, and Chief Judge Justice Rabi Talatu Umar of various allegations, including illegal land allocation and the alleged denial of bail to an accused, Dr. Abubakar Ahmad.

On the bail denial by Justice Kawu Yarima, Abdullahi emphasised that granting bail lies solely within judicial discretion.

He advised Sowore and others aggrieved by court rulings to use appropriate legal decorum rather than engaging in media sensationalism.

He also dismissed accusations against Chief Judge Rabi Talatu Umar over alleged land allocations, noting that mere possession of a site plan does not equal wrongdoing.

Abdullahi affirmed that judicial officers have equal constitutional rights, including the right to own land.

He stated that no law prohibits Dr. Aisha Bala Mohammed and Shamsudeen from owning legal plots of land and conducting lawful businesses in Bauchi and any part of Nigeria.

BCG further defended Finance Commissioner Dr. Yakubu Adamu, asserting that the attacks were politically driven, adding that his growing popularity and potential for success are causing the unnecessary allegations.

The group demanded a public apology from Sowore and warned of legal action if he fails to retract his claims.

“We won’t allow Bauchi’s developmental projects and progress to be dwindled by unfounded smear campaigns,” he declared.
