The World Igbo National Union (WINU), yesterday, condemned the recent brutal killings of Igbo at Umualaoma, Arondizuogu in Ideato North Local Council of Imo State, calling on governors of the South-East to take proactive measures to enhance community safety.
No fewer than 28 unarmed persons were reportedly killed last Thursday as gunmen invaded the community in the early hours, shooting in all directions.
WINU, which lamented the development in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Ifeanyi Uwakwe, stated that the violent and tragic incident, which came to public attention through a heart-wrenching video that surfaced on July 24, 2025, highlighted not only the loss of life but the increasing insecurity faced by communities in Igbo land.
“We express our deepest condolences to the families affected by this heinous act and stand in solidarity with the people of Ideato. The silence of the Imo State government on this urgent matter is disheartening and unacceptable. Government authorities must issue a formal statement condemning these actions and reinforcing their commitment to the protection of lives within our communities,” the group stated.
It demanded that the Imo State government conduct a thorough investigation into the killings and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The group also called on South-East governors to take proactive measures to enhance community safety by sponsoring local vigilantes and installing security cameras in strategic locations to bolster effective policing.
Explaining that such initiatives are critical to combating the rising threat posed by Fulani terrorists who are infiltrating neighbourhoods, the group further urged youths in all communities to remain vigilant and monitor the activities of non-citizens in their areas.
MEANWHILE, the Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has flayed Governor Hope Uzodimma for his inability to either make a public comment or visit the scene of Friday’s killings, five days after.
This was contained in a statement issued yesterday by the Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, Lancelot Obiaku.
While condemning the killings, and contrary to the police’s claim that over seven people were killed, the party insisted that 22 people died in the massacre by gunmen.
The opposition party commiserated with the families and friends of the victims, regretting that the attack confirmed the growing similar incidents happening at other locations in the state.
Also, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for the November 8 Anambra State gubernatorial election, John China Nwosu, has urged state chief executives and security agencies to key into hi-tech in the fight against insecurity and criminality in Nigeria.
He stressed that modern society had since moved away from the use of thugs and enforcers to brutalise citizens in whatever guise, remarking that tracking criminals and fighting crimes will be a function of hi-tech, where crimes could be detected in split seconds through a network of alarm bells that alert the relevant agencies to check them within the same split seconds.
