Teachers beg Tinubu to declare emergency on security
Gunmen have murdered Victor Onwubiko, a legal practitioner in Imo State, but resident in Uturu, Abia State. They also killed four persons, including a 50-year-old farmer, in fresh attack in Plateau State.
Consequently, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has urged President Bola Tinubu to declare state of emergency on security. The Imo incident reportedly occurred on Saturday night while the lawyer was returning to Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, where he lived.
Imo Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Henry Okoye, said law enforcement agents were “on top of the situation” and that a statement would be issued soon by the command.
A source said the tragic event occurred along the Okigwe-Uturu road around 9pm on Saturday.
SIMILARLY, a 50-year-old farmer in Plateau, Gawan Zhwe, has been killed by gunmen. It was gathered that Zhwe was killed in his house alongside two others in Nkienzha village, Bassa Local Council of the state on Sunday.
A community leader in the area, Nuhu Bitrus, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos, yesterday.
Bitrus said before the killing of the three persons, the gunmen had earlier attacked another villager, killing him on the spot.
He said: “Nkienzha village came under gunmen attack last night (Sunday). Those killed during the attack were Gawan Zhwe, who is over 50 years old; Lydia Yakubu, over 48 years and Nuhu Yakubu, 23 years. The attackers also injured two others, including Zhime Yakubu and Monday Yakubu.”
But before the attack last night which led to the death of the three persons, the attackers had killed another villager, Musa Wolo, the previous day.
“So in all, we have four persons that were killed and they have just been buried a while ago. Even the Commander of Sector 3 of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) was present when the victims were buried.”
Irigwe Development Association (IDA) condemned the renewed attacks in a statement, yesterday, by its National Publicity Secretary, Davidson Malison.
NATIONAL President of NUT, Audu Amba, appealed to Tinubu on the emergency declaration, yesterday, in Abuja, at the NUT 6th Annual Solemn Assembly. He said Nigeria, in recent times, had recorded unprecedented security challenges; hence, government must take decisive action to address them.
“It is, therefore, my humble plea that the Federal Government declares a state of emergency as far as the security situation did not improve. Government at all levels should do the needful since security is everybody’s business.
“Nothing can be achieved with insecurity in the country. So, it is imperative to move all stumbling blocks that are bedeviling the security architecture of the country. It is our hope that federal, state, local councils and all stakeholders in education would join hands to protect our schools and the education workers in Nigeria,” he said
