Gunmen, yesterday, killed three police operatives at Umunze, headquarter of Orumba South Council of Anambra State.
The killing is coming few days after suspected kidnappers in police and military uniforms, who operated from a neighbouring border community of Unuaku-Isuochi, in Abia State, were caught by the state Police Command and were paraded.
The latest killing of three policemen by yet-to-be-identified armed men went viral on social media.
In the viral social media video monitored by The Guardian, it was learnt that the victims were mobile policemen attached to the 29 and 54 PMF Umunze.
According to an eyewitness, the gunmen drove to Nsogwu village and shot the policemen on duty.
It was further gathered that, as the policemen tried to escape into nearby compound, the dare-devil armed men shot them, collected their guns, uniforms and escaped in a waiting car.
The eyewitness said: “The worst has happened in Umunze just now. The security men at the checkpoint at Nsogwu have been attacked. “Information has it that three of the officers were gunned down. Umunze is in a war zone now!”
Reacting to the attack, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, described it as an unfortunate incident.
The PPRO, who spoke on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Echeng Echeng, also explained that the Command’s reinforcement teams were already in the area.
He said: “It is an unfortunate incident, and this is part of the highest price security officers pay in serving the nation, but the Police Command is not deterred by this development.
“The reinforcements teams are already in the area, and manhunt for the assailants is ongoing, while joint security patrols have been intensified in the area.”
