ICAN to probe Taraba commissioner over alleged exam malpractice

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has announced an investigation into a case of impersonation involving an individual, who allegedly sat for an exam on behalf of Taraba State Commissioner of Finance.

In a viral video obtained by The Guardian yesterday, the impersonator, identified as Levette Felix, reluctantly confessed to the supervisors, who interviewed her after being caught sitting the professional exam on behalf of the commissioner.

She said: “I am here writing an exam for Sarah Adi. She works in the Ministry of Finance in Taraba.”

She further confessed that she was contracted by one Joshua to sit the exam on her behalf.

Another impersonator, identified as Abraham Moses, was caught in the viral video, alleging that he was writing for one Martins Emmanuel.

Last month, the Taraba State Civil Service sought the sacking of the Commissioner for Finance, Sarah Adi, over alleged irregularities in her biometric verification exercise.

Reacting to the viral video, ICAN, in a statement issued yesterday by its Registrar /Chief Executive Officer, Lanre Olasunkanmi, vowed to commence a thorough investigation into the matter, promising that “appropriate disciplinary measures will be applied in accordance with established regulations, and the findings will be communicated transparently to stakeholders.”

“As the foremost professional accountancy body in Nigeria, ICAN wishes to state unequivocally that it maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy for all forms of examination malpractice, including impersonation,” he said.

Olasunkanmi emphasised that the Institute’s examination processes are guided by globally accepted standards of integrity, and any attempt to compromise them would be treated with utmost seriousness.
