Imo launches digitised mass transit programme, new bus terminals

Under its transformative innovative programme, the Imo State government at the weekend unveiled its own digitised Mass Transit programme.

The innovation would kick off with cutting-edge bus terminals at three locations to enhance and transform public transportation at all nooks and crannies of the state.

In a statement on Sunday by the Special Adviser to the governor on Public Enlightenment, Prince Eze Ugochukwu, and made available to The Guardian, the terminals have world-class facilities, located at designated areas at Naze Junction, Egbu, and Onitsha Roads.

He disclosed that the windows to access parts of the state with ease would create numerous job opportunities for the people, noting that local commerce would be boosted with safe, comfortable, and efficient travel options.

The statement read: “The Imo State government has launched an innovative Mass Transit Programme, featuring the development of three cutting-edge bus terminals designed to transform public transportation in the state. This initiative aims to provide residents with safe, comfortable, and efficient travel options while creating numerous job opportunities and boosting local commerce.

“The new bus terminals, described as comparable to mini airports, will serve as modern transportation hubs equipped with world-class facilities. Each terminal will feature fully air-conditioned spaces, dedicated loading bays, public restrooms, dining options, and shopping areas, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable travel experience. The design mirrors global standards, prioritising passenger safety, comfort, and convenience.

He added that the terminals is to be located at Naze Junction, Egbu, and Onitsha Road are expected to generate significant employment opportunities across various sectors.

He said, “Positions will be available in security, ticketing, facility management, control room operations, electrical and mechanical departments, maintenance, and bus control. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to economic growth and job creation while enhancing public infrastructure.”

He stressed that the investment would provide a reliable and secure system of transport, noting: “By investing heavily in public transportation, the Imo State government aims to provide a reliable and secure transit system that rivals international benchmarks.”

Ugochukwu informed that travellers could look forward to a hassle-free experience, with peace of mind which emanates from ensuring their safety and comfort are prioritised.

“As Imo State rolls out this transformative project, residents can anticipate a new era of modern, efficient, and accessible public transportation that will redefine travel within the state,” he clarified.
