Kano gov excludes appointees, senior civil servants from palliatives

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has flagged off the second batch of palliatives to the less privileged, to cushion the impact of petrol subsidy removal in the state.

He, however, declared that no member of his cabinet, including political appointees, or senior civil servant would benefit from the food items to be distributed.

Emphasising the category of people to enjoy the intervention, the governor insisted that no member of the compliance committee instituted across local council and ward levels should benefit.

Unveiling the distribution at Coronation Hall, Government House, he hinted that the government procured 193,000 bags of 10kg rice and 193,000 bags of 10kg maize for onward disbursement to the poor and vulnerable across the 484 political wards in the state.

Also selected to benefit are Islamiyya Schools, social and rehabilitation centres, people with special needs, junior civil servants not above Level 8, widows and orphans of security operatives, including Kwankwasiyya Guard.

Yusuf disclosed that, apart from the food items, his administration plans to unveil other social components to ease the people’s suffering.

According to him, 5,000 women, youths and people with special needs drawn from the 44 local councils would be empowered on different skill acquisition programmes.

To further ameliorate the impact of the economic hardship on transportation and movement of citizens, the governor said disbursement of Amana buses and taxi transport scheme would soon come on stream.

He added that the Kanawa Mass Transit, established by the previous government, would be re-launched with subsidised fare.

Yusuf has also received the final report of the State Task Force on Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

The task force was set up by the governor at the inception of his administration in June to review the state’s IGR and Tax Consultancy Services.

He also inaugurated the State Standing Committee on Enhancement of Revenue and directed for the immediate implementation of the Task Force report. The committee has Prof. Ibrahim Magaji Barde as Chairman, Dr. Aliyu Danmaraya as Secretary, Abdulkadir Abdussalam (Accountant General), Sani Dambo (Chairman, KIRS), Habu Fagge (Executive Chairman, Pensions Board), Dr. Hamisu Ali (DG Debt Management Office), Dr. Aliyu Aliyu (DG, Bureau of Statistics), Aminu Shuaibu, (SSA, Revenue), Ali Kankarofi, Dr. Abubakar Muazu, Jamila Abdullahi, Zainab Abdulkadir and Ibrahim Bawa as members.
