Lagos State Government has commenced an exchange programme for civil servants in the state’s employment with private sectors to bridge the gap between public and private sectors’ work ethics, operational models and leadership strategies.

The state’s Commissioner for Establishment and Training, Afolabi Ayantayo, who spoke, yesterday, during the official ceremony on the public-private exchange programme of the state government, noted that the effort is particularly significant because it marks the realisation of a bold and progressive initiative conceptualised by the government.

Ayantayo, who reiterated the state government’s commitment to ensuring that the public sector does not lag in efficiency, productivity and innovation, said: “This programme was not borne out of necessity alone, but out of a vision to build a civil service that is as dynamic, innovative and result-oriented as its private sector counterparts.

“We recognise that excellence in governance requires continuous learning and adaptation.”

“That is why this programme was designed to bridge the gap between public and private sector work ethics, operational models and leadership strategies.

“Through this initiative, we are challenging outdated stereotypes about public service and proving that civil servants can thrive in competitive environments, drive institutional reforms and lead change with the same efficiency as their private sector counterparts.”

The commissioner, while maintaining that the Ministry of Establishments and Training is committed to developing policies and programmes that enhance the capacity, efficiency and effectiveness of the workforce, further said: “We understand that training and exposure are key drivers of institutional reform and that is why we will continue to seek strategic partnerships and innovative learning opportunities that prepare civil servants for the evolving demands of work.”

In the welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Establishment and Training, Olubusola Abidakun, said that the project was meant to ensure that officers fit into the 21st Century’s demands.

Also, Chief Executive Officer of Kinder Consulting Limited, Patricia Akinlotan, said that the programme would provide hands-on industry experience for the participants, enhance public service delivery, allow participants to develop new skills, and get exposed to industry best practices, including valuable connections.

In his keynote address, Lagos State Head of Service, Bode Agoro, noted that those who do not love their work could not remain in the civil service because it takes a lot of commitment and passion for the job.
