Lagos plans conversion of LASUCOM into medical university
Lagos State Government said it plans to convert the Lagos State University College Of Medicine (LASUCOM) into a medical university.
Officials of ministries of tertiary education, health, and LASUCOM on Tuesday convened a stakeholders’ meeting on the establishment of a stand-alone medical university in Lagos.
Speaking at the meeting in Ikeja, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule said the move is in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s effort to bequeath an international standard college of medicine and excellent healthcare system to the people of Lagos.
He said the plan was to ensure that Lagos has a medical university capable of bridging the gap in medical personnel and improving the healthcare delivery system.
Sule also reiterated Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to improve the capacity building of medical doctors and allied professions in the state to global standards.
He said the government has invested human capital and financial resources in LASUCOM to align with the best global standards to strengthen the state healthcare system.
The Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, said the state is blessed with enough health and medical infrastructures and facilities to run a successful university of medicine.
Also, the Provost of LASUCOM, Professor Abiodun Adewuya, assured of qualified and well-motivated personnel to make the proposed University of Medicine a pride for the state and Nigeria.
