As part of efforts aimed at enhancing Lagos’ public transportattion system, the management of Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has reaffirmed its commitment to the timely completion of the Marina and Mile 2 Interchange Transportation Hubs.

Managing Director of LAMATA, Engr. Abimbola Akinajo, disclosed this during an onsite inspection of the project alongside officials from the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the World Bank. The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, was also in attendance.

The transport interchange hubs are a key component of the Lagos State Strategic Transport Master Plan (STMP), which aims to create an integrated, efficient, and modern transport system for Africa’s fastest-growing city.

Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, stated during the visit, “The Interchange Hubs are a testament to our commitment to transforming Lagos into a world-class megacity. This project will not only enhance connectivity but also reduce travel time, thus improving the quality of life for millions of residents.”

According to Akinajo, the Marina and Mile 2 Interchange Hubs are designed to integrate multiple transport modes, including Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), rail, and ferry services.

The LAMATA MD emphasized that the interchange hubs will include modern amenities such as BRT and ferry terminals, feeder bus terminals, retail shops, a canteen, public restrooms, and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.

Additionally, the project also features dedicated bicycle lanes and drop-off areas for private vehicles. To ensure a smooth experience for all commuters, accessibility elements like escalators and facilities for persons with disabilities have been integrated.

In addition to enhancing public transport efficiency, the interchange hubs are expected to boost economic growth by supporting local businesses, attracting investment, and generating job opportunities. The project is in line with global sustainable development goals by promoting public transportation use and leading to a reduction of carbon emissions.

Akinajo noted that the Marina and Mile 2 Interchange Hubs are set for completion in the fourth quarter of the year, establishing a new benchmark for public transportation infrastructure in Nigeria. LAMATA, the agency responsible for coordinating public transportation in Lagos State, continues to work in collaboration with partners such as AFD, a public financial institution that supports development projects worldwide.
