LASG to start e-call up system for trucks on Lekki corridor Sept 23
Commits to reducing accidents on water through safety education Lagos State Government has said that the e-call up system for managing truck movement within the axis will commence from September 23, 2024, after the August 1 deadline.
In a statement, yesterday, by the Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Ministry of Transportation, Bolanle Ogunmola, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said that the commencement date was extended on stakeholders’ request to give adequate room for full compliance.
He added that the e-call up system is ready for implementation as a sustainable, effective and technology-driven solution for truck movement in the Lekki-Epe corridor.
Osiyemi explained that the application of e-call up system would help to synchronise the movement of trucks assessing the Lekki Deep Seaport and other industries within the corridor, starting from Eleko junction to Lekki Free Trade Zone.
Also speaking on the development, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, who is saddled with the enforcement of the e-call up system, said that an interim arrangement had been put in place to decongest the roads through evacuation of all illegal tankers from the red zone by a joint task force of the state, councils, security agencies and stakeholders.
RELATEDLY, the state government has emphasised the importance of water safety education in reducing accidents and promoting sustainable transportation.
The state’s Commissioner for Transportation, who stated this, at the weekend, during the conclusion of the fourth edition of the Lagos Water Savvy Kid’s Programme, a week-long water safety and swimming training exercise for 50 school pupils from Bariga/Somolu axis by Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), said that the programme aligns with the state’s transportation master plan of safe multimodal transport system.
Osiyemi The commissioner noted that children would be given good tools to communicate with adults and parents at home on how to use or commute on the water safely on waterways.
He urged the children not to abandon the skills learnt but improve on them.
In his welcome address, the General Manager of LASWA, Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, reiterated the state government’s commitment to ensuring safety for all waterways users, particularly school children.
Also, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Olawale Musa, stressed the need for community engagement and collaboration in achieving a safer and more inclusive water transportation system, encouraging parents and community leaders to support the initiative.
