Lagos State University (LASU) has congratulated Mojisola Meranda on her emergence as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, following the removal of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.

In a post on ‘X’, LASU expressed pride in her appointment, highlighting the historic nature of her achievement as the first female Speaker in the state.

“We wish her the very best in her legislative duties to the people of Lagos State,” LASU said.

Meranda holds a B.Sc. in Public Administration from LASU and later obtained a Master’s in Public and International Affairs (MPIA) from the University of Lagos in 2020. She is pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Public Sector Management at the University of York, UK.

The appointment follows the impeachment of Obasa by members of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday, over allegations of abuse of office and financial misconduct.

The lawmakers accused him of multiple statutory and financial infractions, including spending ₦17 billion on constructing the Assembly’s building gate and ₦200 million on the recently organised 22nd Thanksgiving service for staff.

Obasa, 52, had served as Speaker since June 8, 2015, taking office alongside former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. However, citing the alleged misconduct, the lawmakers reconvened and voted to remove him from office.

Taking her oath of office, Hon. Meranda pledged her commitment to upholding the constitution and serving the people of Lagos State.

“I affirm that I will be faithful as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly; that I will perform my functions honestly to the best of my ability, faithfully, and in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” she declared.
