Livestock ministry to spend N129m on egg production, technical support

As Nigerians continue to pay more for egg, beef, chicken, fish and other animal proteins despite government’s promises to beat down prices, the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has earmarked the sum of N44,003,500 for expansion of the national egg production scheme in the proposed 2025 budget.
This is even as the ministry intends to spend over N85 million on ‘technical backstopping’, (that technical plans to ensure projects are on course). Other projects that are expected to take a large chuck of the N11,800,000,000 total budget of the ministry include N700 million for meeting sittings and collaborations meetings, N300 million for one million doses of vaccines for cattle nationwide, N125 million for vaccine equipment for animals, N270 million for procurement of ambulatory vehicles for veterinary medical centres, N110 million for emergency veterinary humanitarian services and over N207 million for procurement of 2,500 litres of assorted chemicals per pesticides.
Also, according to the 2025 budget proposal for the ministry, N156 million is expected to be spent for aerial control operation in the dry and wet seasons, N90 million to spent on the construction of solar powered vaccine cold room in Oyo N150 million for animal health equipment and N127 million for animal disease surveillance.
Other key spending of the budget are N259 million for sis abattoirs/slaughter houses’ rehabilitation and for ruminant and pigs in Lagos, Adamawa, Enugu, Bayelsa, Benue and Anambra states, N134 million as support for honey production, N315 million for ranches, N600 million for animal artificial insemination services, N600 million for solar powered boreholes in 30 federal constituencies, N200 million for livestock and over N116 million for purchase of computers, laptops, scanners and accessories.
The ministry also wants to spend over N106 million as welfare mechanism to boost productivity, N124 million for ministerial retreat and N370 for vehicles purchase, among others.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, has pledged the Federal Government’s unwavering support to revitalising the poultry sector and addressing the challenges hindering its growth
Hosting a delegation from the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), led by its Patron and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Asiwaju Badmus, the minister highlighted the importance of immediate intervention and sustainable policies to strengthen the industry’s role in Nigeria’s economy and food security.
