LUTH clinical lecturers to commence indefinite strike tomorrow

Clinical lecturers under the aegis of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) chapter of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) will commence an indefinite industrial action on Monday.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the association.

According to the union’s chairman, Dr Kehinde Okunade, and the association’s secretary, Dr Olukayode Akinmola, this industrial action results from the non-payment of their Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).

Members of the association had issued a 21-day ultimatum, which had been ignored.

“Sequel to our letter dated 14th January 2025, notifying your good office of the 21-day ultimatum issued by the MDCAN Southwest zone on the unduly prolonged and unjust non-payment of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) scale to Clinical Lecturers (Medical/Dental Specialists) in the universities across the Southwest zone of Nigeria, including the University of Lagos, the Clinical Lecturers in the College of Medicine.

“The University of Lagos, which is a member of the MDCAN-LUTH Chapter, has been directed to proceed with a total indefinite strike action starting at midnight (24:00 hours) on Monday, 3rd February 2025,” the statement read.

Okunade and Akinmola noted that the institution’s clinical lecturers will suspend lectures, tutorials, examinations, meetings, and other academic activities during the industrial action.
