As Muslims celebrate Eid-el-fitr, the Director-General of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), South-East Zone, Alhaji Gidado Siddiki, has cautioned Nigerians against ethnic profiling of fellow citizens as criminals.
Siddiki who made the call in a goodwill message to the Muslim umma, the government and the good people of the zone to mark the event pleaded for truthfulness, fairness and restraints in information management so as to avoid tendencies of unfair blanket criminalisation of any group of people. He said, “Criminals, wherever they are identified, should be made to face the full wrath of the laws of the land.”
According to him, the safety of the citizens is the primary commitment of governments, stressing that such should apply in the country. Siddiki prayed for the spirit of Eid-el-Fitr to prevail and continue to instruct people’s lives and attitudes towards one another.
He appreciated the governments and people of the South-East Zone for providing the Fulani Community in the zone the enablement to successfully do their business in the geo-political zone.
The MACBAN’s leader sincerely pleaded for an endeavour on the part of leaders and the led to work out ways and manners of propagating attitudes that would foster peace and understanding in our communities, local government councils and states.
He implored the government, traditional and religious leaders, as well as other influential groups in the South East not to relent in their advocacy for peaceful co-existence amongst Nigerians wherever they choose to live and ply their legitimate businesses.
Observing that Eid-el-Fitr is performed every year by Muslim umma all over the world to mark the end of the fasting in the holy month of Ramadan, the leader of Fulani Community said the period is a time of joy and celebration, with Muslims gathering together with family and friends, exchanging gifts, sharing food and praying together.
Siddiki used the privilege to pray for peaceful co-existence among Nigerians, emphasising the need by Nigerians to pray for improved peace and understanding among his members, who are genuinely engaged in the business of cattle rearing in the Eastern part of Nigeria and the host communities in the South East.
He commended His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto Caliphate and the Chairman Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, for his wisdom in the coordination of all the Islamic affairs in the country and ensuring that all Muslims start and end fasting of the holy month and observe Sallah the same day, adding that the peace the Muslim umma enjoys today is unprecedented in Nigeria.
