Muslim association mourns Awujale, condoles Abiodun, Ogun people

The Muslim Association of Nigeria (MAN) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the revered monarch, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, who passed away in July 2024 after an iconic 64-year reign.

In a condolence message addressed to the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, the association extended its heartfelt sympathies to the people of Ijebuland, Ogun State, and all Nigerians affected by the monarch’s demise.

Signed by the association’s President, Professor Dhikru Yagboyaju, and National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Mudirakat Ajibona, the letter described Oba Adetona as a legendary traditional ruler, not only in Ogun State but across Yorubaland and beyond, whose leadership was marked by uncommon wisdom and devotion to public good.

“His reign as Awujale, which lasted from April 1960 to July 2024, ushered in monumental growth and educational advancement for Ijebu-Ode and the entire Ijebuland,” the statement read. “His passing signifies the end of a golden era, a loss felt deeply across generations.”

Citing the Qur’an 21:56 — “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un” (“Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him is our return”) — the Muslim association emphasised the inevitability of death and the divine timing of all things.

MAN prayed for the repose of the monarch’s soul in Al-Jannah Firdaus and asked Almighty Allah to comfort the Ogun State government, the royal family, friends, associates, and the people left behind by the late Oba.

The association also reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Ogun State during this period of mourning and pledged to continue promoting unity, peace, and community development in the spirit of Oba Adetona’s enduring legacy.
