The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC), Osun Axis, has expressed anger over the poor state of the Iree-Ada road, describing it as a “death trap” that continues to endanger the lives of students, staff, and residents.
The road, which serves as the main link to Osun State Polytechnic, Iree (OSPOLY), has reportedly caused several accidents, leading to injuries, loss of lives, and damage to vehicles.
NANS JCC, Osun Axis, while condemning the neglect of the Iree-Ada road, announced a protest to the Governor’s Office in Osogbo over what it described as a “death trap” threatening students and residents.
In a statement signed by its leaders and announced yesterday by the spokesperson for NANS Osun Axis, Comrade Ibraheem Ayomide Alabi, the association accused the Osun State government under Governor Ademola Adeleke of neglecting the vital route despite repeated calls for intervention, while giving attention to other road projects in the state.
“Let it be clearly stated: The Governor’s continuous silence in the face of this injustice is a direct insult to the students’ community. If the Governor can see our agitation and still do nothing, then he has shown that he places no value on the lives, welfare, or education of Osun State students,” the statement reads.
To press home their demands, the student body announced a peaceful protest to the Governor’s Office in Abere, Osogbo, on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at 9:00 a.m.
Their demands include the immediate commencement of construction on the Iree-Ada road, which has claimed the lives of students and continues to pose a grave danger to thousands; the rehabilitation and construction of all major roads leading to student communities across Osun State to ensure safety and ease of transportation; and the proper recognition and inclusion of the student community in governance processes, particularly those directly affecting education and youth development.
The association warned that it would no longer remain silent in the face of what it described as “inhumane abandonment” and vowed to sustain its agitation until action is taken.
