The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Niger State Council, has lauded Governor Muhammad Umaru Bago for implementing the new minimum wage for civil servants across the board.

The Chairman of the NLC, Idris Lafene, made the commendation while speaking to Guardian in Minna.

Lafene, who expressed delight over the unprecedented approval and implementation of the new minimum wage in November 2024 as earlier directed by the governor, noted that the Labour would continue to synergise with the state government to provide people-oriented programs and policies aimed at alleviating the economic hardship the citizenry faces.

Lafene added, “It could be recalled that during our negotiation of the new minimum wage with the state government representatives, Governor Muhammad Umaru Bago was about to travel out of the state, but he gave a matching order that the new minimum wage should be implemented by November 2024. NLC is overwhelmed by the implementation, saying that workers in the state had seen the difference in their November salary.”

He reiterated that organised labour would not relent in its efforts to continue prioritising the welfare of workers.

Some of the civil servants who spoke to Guardian commended the governor for the implementation of the minimum wage, pointing out that it is the highest in the Northcentral states.

The workers have promised to redouble their efforts in the discharge of their responsibilities, describing the governor as a “talk-and-do” leader.
