Adesina mourns Adebanjo

Dr Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Nigeria’s elder statesman, Pa Ayo Adebanjo.

The AfDB boss in a statement on Sunday, described Adebanjo as a fearless defender of democracy and a lifelong champion of justice, equity, and truth.

Adesina hailed Pa Adebanjo’s unwavering principles and selfless sacrifice in the quest for a more just and equitable Nigeria.

“Pa Adebanjo was a shining light who for decades consistently spoke out on major challenges facing Nigeria.

“His restless quest for a more just, fairer, and equitable society, with room for all, was powered by bold and visionary words that pricked the conscience of the nation,” Adesina said.

He described the late elder statesman as a towering figure in progressive leadership, a staunch advocate of true federalism, and a voice of wisdom and courage that shaped Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

Adesina also shared his personal connection with Pa Adebanjo, recounting how he was a friend and compatriot of his late father, Roland Adesina, and a father figure to him.

“I was happy that I was able to spend some time with him last year and will always cherish that special moment, his very generous words of advice, and his fatherly prayers.

“His impact on my life was profound. I recall a touching moment when Pa Adebanjo attended the Awolowo Prize for Leadership event in 2024, despite his advanced age of 95.

“This demonstrated his deep commitment to leadership and mentorship. His presence at the event was a testament to his selfless and kind nature.

“I was deeply moved as he made a determined effort to walk up to the elevated stage. I rushed down to prevent him from doing so, and in that moment, he wrapped his arms around me in a warm embrace,” Adesina said.

He lauded Pa Adebanjo’s humility and integrity, noting a remarkable instance where he set aside political differences to acknowledge the contributions of Nigerian leaders who had supported Adesina’s career.

“Nigeria has lost a giant whose ideals, values, and unwavering stand for justice will continue to inspire those who dare to dream of a better nation.

“May his soul rest in peace, and may his indelible legacy continue to inspire generations to come,” he said.
