Five worshippers die, others hospitalised after feast in Ibadan church
Five worshippers have died while others are receiving treatment at the Infectious Disease Centre (IDC) in Olodo, Ibadan, Oyo State, after participating in a feast called ‘ipese’ organised by a white-garment church in Ibadan.
About 50 of the worshippers have been discharged from the centre.
The incident occurred during a church service last Sunday.
There is uncertainty about whether the feast was responsible for the deaths.
Various government agencies, including the police, Directorate of State Services (DSS), media organisations, and the World Health Organisation (WHO) have visited the church to investigate.
The church premises have not been locked, and the Shepherd-in-Charge is attending to visitors.
A senior medical staff at IDC Olodo confirmed the incident and stated that 50 victims have been treated and discharged, while others are still receiving treatment.
The state commissioner for health is expected to address the press on the incident next week.
The State Police Command has confirmed that an investigation is ongoing.
