Cross River State governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the passing of his Commissioner for Tourism and Culture, Mr. Abubakar Ewa.

The commissioner died in a private medical facility on Wednesday evening after participating in the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting, where he contributed to the proceedings and later excused himself from the meeting.

The governor expressed the sadness on Thursday in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Nsa Gill, in Calabar.

He described the late commissioner as a dedicated public servant and a passionate advocate for the tourism and culture sector in the state.

According to the governor, the late commissioner had contributed to the development of the state’s tourism industry, including attracting investments to tourist sites.

“The state has lost a valuable asset; his dedication to serving our people and his commitment to promoting the rich cultural heritage of our state will be greatly missed,” Governor Otu said.

The governor extended his condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and colleagues of the late commissioner.

Late Ewa, who died at 62, had served the state in various capacities: as Secretary and later Chairman of the Boki Local Government Area (LGA).

He also served as Special Adviser on Community Relations and Secretary of the Anti-Deforestation Task Force before his appointment as Commissioner of Tourism and Culture in August 2023.
