Petrol tanker crashes on Oyo–Ibadan Expressway

A major disaster was averted on Wednesday when operatives of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency swiftly contained a petrol tanker accident at Odo-Oba, along the Oyo–Ibadan Expressway in Ogbomoso.

The incident, reported by a concerned citizen, Mr. Felix, at 8:45 am, involved a 45,000-litre tanker carrying Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) that somersaulted and spilled its contents along the roadside.

Led by Chief Fire Superintendent (CFS) Dairo, the fire service team immediately deployed to the scene, initiated emergency protocols, and applied chemical foam compounds to blanket the spillage.

Their quick action suppressed the flammability of the fuel and prevented what could have been a catastrophic explosion.

No fire outbreak was recorded, and properties worth millions of naira were saved.

Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Fire Services Agency, Dr. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, commended the firefighters for their swift response and urged the public to prioritise fire safety.

“We must all be conscious of fire safety at all times. Every vehicle, especially those transporting flammable materials, should be equipped with fire extinguishers, and drivers must have emergency numbers saved on their phones,” Akinwande said.

He also called on motorists to strictly adhere to road safety regulations to prevent avoidable accidents.
The fire truck returned to base at 12:20 pm after the successful containment operation.
