Police nab three suspects in foiled kidnapping attempt, recover firearms in Calabar

Operatives of the Cross River State Police Command have arrested three suspects in a foiled kidnapping attempt in Calabar South and recovered firearms.

The spokesperson for the Command, SP Ugbo Irene, in a statement, said that the operation was carried out by the Divisional Police Officer and Surveillance Team from the Uwanse Division following a credible tip-off.

She said that the suspects were intercepted while allegedly attempting to abduct one Nkereuwem Peter, 38, who resides at 35, Eneobong Avenue, Calabar South, saying that upon sighting the police team, the suspects reportedly opened fire, but were overpowered and subdued by the operatives.

Three suspects were arrested at the scene: Henry Efa Otu, 24, of Efut Effioene Street, Calabar Lawrence Ita Inyang, 46, of 32, Efut Effioene, Calabar Umoh Ekpo, 46, also of 32, Efut Effioene Clan

Two locally-made pistols and one live cartridge were recovered from the suspects.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Rashid Afegbua, commended the officers for their swift response and reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to reducing crime to the barest minimum.

He warned criminal elements in the state to desist from unlawful acts, adding that the Command is fully empowered to take decisive actions against crime.

The CP also called on members of the public to continue providing timely and useful information to the police and other security agencies to ensure public safety.

Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to apprehend fleeing members of the gang and bring them to justice.
