Police recover 21 AK-47s, 115 vehicles, explosives after crackdown in Rivers

The Rivers State Police Command has recorded major breakthroughs in its fight against crime, recovering arms, ammunition, and stolen vehicles in a series of recent operations.

Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, disclosed this yesterday during a press briefing in Port Harcourt. He said that between January and August 2025, the command recovered 21 AK-47 rifles, 66 locally made guns, 8,000 rounds of ammunition, and 115 vehicles, including 19 stolen cars traced to a car-snatching syndicate.

“In the past months, the Rivers State Police Command, working in close synergy with the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), DSS, and other critical security stakeholders, has made remarkable progress in our sustained operations to curb criminal activities across the state,” Adepoju said.

“Through this united effort, we have intensified our crackdown on violent crimes, leading to the arrest of numerous suspects involved in heinous offences such as armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism, human trafficking, and murder, as well as the recovery of vital exhibits,” he added.

Among the notable operations, Adepoju said police arrested 12 suspects for vandalising an oil-spilled well in Kpean community. Items recovered included three GXI Dynatrac cones and three suspected explosives.

He also announced the arrest of seven suspects linked to the murder of Bright Owhor, with recoveries including one MTN SIM card, four locally made pistols, seven rounds of 9mm ammunition, two live cartridges, a mini bus, and a Toyota Camry.

In another operation, police dismantled an interstate car-snatching syndicate, arrested 11 suspects, and recovered 19 stolen vehicles. Two notorious cultists were also arrested with an AK-47 rifle, two magazines, and 10 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.

At Eresekiri fishing port, Abonnema, a suspect was arrested for sea piracy and threatening violence. Recovered items included one LAR rifle, 19 rounds of live ammunition, a pump-action gun with one live cartridge, and a wrap of dynamite.

Adepoju reaffirmed the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging residents to support security agencies with credible information. He assured that with the forthcoming local government elections, adequate personnel had been deployed across the state to guarantee safety at the polls.
