Nigerian PhD student wins academic excellence award at US varsity
Abdulmateen Adebiyi, a fourth-year PhD student in Computer Science at the University of Missouri, has earned the prestigious Outstanding Achievement Award from Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the International Honor Society for Computing and Information Disciplines.
The recognition underscores his dedication to advancing the field of computer science and his ongoing contributions to research in healthcare.
The scholar, in a statement, expressed his gratitude to the mentors who have supported his academic journey.
“I would like to thank Dr. Kamrul Islam, the department chair; Dr. Praveen Rao, my advisor; Dr. Becevic Mirna, my committee member; and Dr. Michael Jurczyk, our UPE chapter advisor, for their mentorship and guidance,” Adebiyi said. “This achievement is a testament to their unwavering belief in my potential, for which I am very grateful.”
Adebiyi’s work at the Scalable Data Science Lab, under the mentorship of Associate Professor Praveen Rao, focuses on utilising artificial intelligence and knowledge graphs for disease diagnosis.
His research has practical implications in healthcare, particularly in dermatology. Using deep learning techniques, Adebiyi aims to assist physicians in triaging skin care patients while also analysing video data from Dermatology ECHO sessions to extract critical keywords that help primary care physicians pinpoint key discussions and treatments.
His PhD studies have been made possible through funding from the University of Missouri TRIUMPH grant and the Mizzou Telehealth Network, emphasising the interdisciplinary nature of his research and its potential impact on the medical field.
Adebiyi’s recognition by UPE is a significant milestone in his academic career, and his work continues to show great promise in both the tech and healthcare industries.
