Obi distances himself from online businesses with his identity

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has warned that his name and image are being falsely used to endorse online businesses, clarifying that he has no association with such ventures.

In a statement posted on X on Thursday, Obi said previous warnings had been ignored and urged the public to be wary of any online content linking him to commercial projects.

“At no time have I authorised any individual, business or online platform to use my name, image or identity for profit-making ventures,” he said, calling such conduct “fraudulent, deceptive, and aimed solely at exploiting public trust.”

Obi cautioned that only information published via his verified official channels should be regarded as genuine. He urged Nigerians facing suspicious adverts or endorsements to verify their authenticity before engaging.

His latest alert follows earlier controversies in Nigeria around impersonation and fake endorsements.

In recent months, regulators and law enforcement agencies have flagged a rise in scams that leverage celebrity identities, sometimes aided by AI-generated images or deepfake videos.

In his message, Obi said that despite earlier statements from his aides, some individuals continued to exploit his identity.

He urged that any violations be reported to the appropriate authorities for investigation.
