Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevweri, on Tuesday, urged members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) deployed to the state to remain focused and dedicated to their duties while avoiding vices such as cultism, drug abuse, and alcoholism, saying it could jeopardise not only their service year but also their future.
The governor also told them to uphold the ideals of national service and resist the temptation of other anti-social behaviours as they proceed to their places of primary assignment.
Oborevwori gave the advice at the official closing ceremony of the 2025 Batch A Stream II orientation course held at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Issele-Uku, near Asaba, Delta State.
Speaking through the Commissioner for Youth, Mr. ThankGod Trakiriowei, he said, “I urge you to be mindful of the company you keep. Conduct yourselves with dignity and avoid any words or actions that could incite conflict or disrupt social harmony. Embrace this call to national service with seriousness and patriotism. Your attitude throughout the service year will determine not only what you gain from this unique experience but also how much the nation benefits from your contributions.”
He assured the corps members of a safe and peaceful stay in Delta State, adding that they would experience the hospitality and goodwill of the people wherever they are posted.
Oborevweri also advised them to respect the customs and cultural norms of their host communities and show adaptability and tolerance in their interactions.
“You are the leaders of tomorrow. This new phase of your life comes with greater freedom, but I urge you to be cautious and avoid distractions that could derail your future or endanger your lives,” he added.
In his remarks, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mr. John Kwaghe, applauded the corps members for their discipline, resilience, and exemplary conduct during the three-week orientation programme.
He noted that the corps members had been equipped with essential skills and values through a series of lectures and engagements focusing on national integration, security consciousness, cultural awareness, teaching methodologies, and financial literacy.
“You have demonstrated the highest ideals of the NYSC—patriotism, responsibility, and unity. Your comportment has been a source of pride to us all and a signpost to your readiness to serve Nigeria with integrity and loyalty,” Kwaghe said.
