One dead, six injured in Imo landmine explosion – NEMA

A tragic landmine explosion at Eke Ubaheze Market Square in Awo-Idemili, Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State, which occurred on Tuesday, has left one person dead and six others injured

This National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) revealed this in a statement released on Saturday morning.

“A landmine explosion occurred at the Eke Ubaheze Market Square in Awo-Idemili, Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State. According to the spokesperson of the Imo State Police Command, Mr. Henry Okoye, the explosion happened around 2:40 p.m. on Tuesday, 24th June 2025, during peak trading hours,” the statement read in part.

A woman who stepped on the explosive lost her life. Emergency responders rushed her to the hospital but every attempt to resuscitate her proved abortive as she succumbed to severe injuries and trauma.

The command spokesperson further revealed that six others sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed hospital for security reasons.

Normalcy returned to the vicinity after the Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit of the Nigeria Police Force conducted a sweep of the area, cordoned it off, and declared it safe.
