Oyo Assembly passes vote of confidence in Makinde

The Oyo State House of Assembly has passed a vote of confidence in the Governor Seyi Makinde-led administration, commending its transparency, developmental focus, and performance across key sectors of the state’s economy.

The resolution was made during the House’s first plenary session following a six-week legislative recess, held on Tuesday at the Assembly Chambers, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan. The session was presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin.

The vote of confidence followed a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin, and seconded by the Chief Whip, Hon. Gbenga Oyekola. In the motion, lawmakers praised the administration for significant achievements in road infrastructure across all seven geopolitical zones of the state, improvements in healthcare and security, and an increase in the state’s internally generated revenue (IGR) from N40 billion to N102 billion annually.

Responding to public concern over the recent approval of a N300 billion loan request during an emergency sitting, the lawmakers maintained that the decision aligned with the state’s broader development objectives.

However, some lawmakers expressed caution on the state’s borrowing pattern. Hon. Jimoh Ibrahim (Orelope Constituency) and Hon. Abdullazeez Musibau (Kajola Constituency) urged the government to explore alternative funding sources by leveraging internal capacities rather than depending heavily on loans for statewide development.

In his remarks, Speaker Ogundoyin acknowledged the notable progress made under Governor Makinde’s leadership, especially in infrastructure development over the past six years. He noted that while Oyo currently ranks sixth in foreign loans and fourth in domestic debt among South-West states—according to the Debt Management Office’s Q1 2025 report—the Assembly remains committed to enabling each member to fulfil their legislative duties without intimidation.

The speaker also encouraged members to remain accountable to their constituents and continue delivering democratic dividends.
