Retirees under the aegis of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners, representing agencies such as NITEL, the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Railway Corporation, on Monday staged a protest over unpaid entitlements, alleged pension arrears of up to 35 months, and the non-payment of the N35,000 palliative.
The demonstration, which took place on Monday, also centred on the alleged non-payment of the N35,000 palliative approved by the Federal Government.
According to the protesters, the prolonged delay in settling their entitlements has plunged many of them into severe hardship, with some unable to meet basic daily needs.
During the protest, the retirees marched through the streets, chanting solidarity songs such as, “Solidarity forever, we shall always fight for our right,” while holding placards with inscriptions demanding immediate action from the authorities.
They also urged the Federal Government to provide a definite date for the payment of all outstanding entitlements, stressing that many pensioners were battling health and financial crises due to the prolonged wait.
